Charlotte is one of the preeminent centers of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in the southern United States. Charlotteans have access to numerous top notch jiu jitsu and martial arts gyms. We did some research and compiled a list of the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools and academies in the Charlotte area.

Queen City Jiu Jitsu

Located about 30 minutes from central Charlotte you will find Queen City Jiu Jitsu. Queen City is a Pedro Sauer affiliated school which is amongst the most respected affiliations in the world.

QCJJ focuses purely on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and does not offer other martial arts programs. QCJJ also has a kids program for parents looking to train with their children or just to have their children train.

Renzo Gracie Charlotte

Renzo Gracie is one of the largest and most celebrated affiliations in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The Renzo’s located in south Charlotte lives up to the Renzo Gracie name.

The academy offers 6 adult jiu jitsu classes per week, 3 in the gi and 3 without the gi. RGC also offers a nogi MMA class a few times per week as well. RGC also had a kids class for kids under 15 years of age. New members can take their first class free.

Charlotte Jiu Jitsu Academy

Located in the heart of Charlotte is Charlotte Jiu Jitsu Academy. The school focuses just on jiu jitsu and does not offer any other martial arts. Members have access to a whopping 18 classes per week, with two in the morning and two in the evening Monday thru Thursday.

CJJA does not offer kids classes and only caters to adults looking to train in BJJ. Because the school is so centrally located, it may be the ideal location for anyone who lives in the city center.

Fight to Win BJJ Charlotte

Fight to Win BJJ is located in North Charlotte. The school is operated and instructed by Steve Hall, a 3rd degree blackbelt under jiu jitsu and MMA legend Royce Gracie.

FTW Charlotte emphasizes the Gracie school of self-defense. Beginners can choose to start with the Gracie Self Defense curriculum which gives them a practical understanding of grappling in a real world sense. As you advance you can join the regular jiu jitsu curriculum. FTW also offers classes in Judo and Wrestling to compliment the BJJ classes.

Lucas Lepri Brazilian Jiu Jitsu & Fitness

Located east of downtown Charlotte near Sardis Woods is Lucas Lepri BJJ. Lucas Lepri is a well respected jiu jitsu affiliation with multiple schools around the world. The gym in Charlotte however is instructed by the man himself, 9x blackbelt world champion Lucas Lepri.

LLBJJ focuses exclusively on jiu jitsu and has a beginner, intermediate and advanced curriculum for the gi and nogi. The school has several kids classes throughout the week, broken up in multiple age groups (3-5, 6-9, 10-13).

Checkmat Charlotte

Checkmat Charlotte, located about 25 minute south of the city, is part of the esteemed Checkmat affiliation of jiu jitsu schools. Orginally founded in Brazil, Checkmat is the currently the 3rd highest rated team in the world as determined by the IBJJF.

In Charlotte the school is headed by coach Michael Allen, a 1st degree blackbelt. The academy has several adult jiu jitsu classes in the gi and without it, as well as kids classes. Checkmat also has dedicated women’s only jiu jitsu and self defense classes. New members can get their first class free.

Top Martial Arts and Fitness

Located in Pineville is Top Martial Arts and Fitness, a mixed martial arts academy. The academy is run by multiple 1st degree blackbelts who oversee both the adults and kids classes.

Unlike many other jiu jitsu schools in Charlotte, TMAF focuses on BJJ as well as muay thai or thai kickboxing. Those looking to add striking to their martial arts prowess may want to consider TMAF for that reason.

Great Grappling Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Located over the border in Fort Mill, South Carolina is Great Grappling BJJ. GGBJJ has a huge team of jiu jitsu instructors to serve members in the multitude of classes they offer. They offer gi and nogi classes which are subdivided into beginners, advanced and sparring classes. GGBJJ also offers a women’s curriculum for women only classes.

GGBJJ does not offer other martial arts and chooses to focus on jiu jitsu. They have kids classes that are divided by age group, including having an advanced kids class.
